Timeframes known for generations are all of a sudden becoming ‘dangerous’. The nomadic herders need the frozen rivers to move their herds for the winter camps to the summer camps. They seem to have to move sooner every year. Of course the nomads notice something is happening, but as these people have been "trained" over the generations to be inventive, flexible and open minded to adapt to whatever they get to deal with, they do not complain too much and adapt accordingly.

Once arrived in Khankh, the pressure built up quickly as we prepared for the winter ascent of the Munkh Saridagh. With the approval of the local Shaman, we started the climb. We first took a horse ride to the mountain foot. We offloaded the horses and got our gear ready to give it a go.

From the beginning the steep approach was hard on our bodies, lots of rocks and stones made the climb exhausting and technically difficult. At about 2500 m the altitude and heavy backpack took their toll on our bodies and the progress was slow.

On a ridge at about 3200m we installed our base camp and had a meal before hitting the sack under a minus 25 C full moon sky.

The following day we reached the peak at 12:10

After the well deserved pictures we immediately started the descent, back to where we had left the horses behind. The herders welcomed us with respect and deep joy.

Our way back to Khatgal, this time via the eastern shore of the Blue Pearl wasn’t any easier than the other side. The ice conditions, a very fine layer, melting and freezing over and over again, never seen before and of course due to the too mild temperatures, was extremely hard on the dogs and we permanently had to put them on new self made "booties".

Also more and more crevasses and stretches of open water had to be handled with care.

The arrival at Khatgal and the logical end of the expedition was as joyful as abrupt and even a bit painful. You can’t prepare for this moment: Although you feel somewhat proud and happy you achieved the goals, but all of a sudden all the adrenaline is gone and you don’t know quite well what to do or even what to say or think.

Mongolians, I am thankful to have witnessed the beauty of your country, please handle it with care. Throughout the expeditions we have seen strange weather phenomena’s and the nomads confirmed our observations. More abrupt changes in the Mongolians and global climate could mean disasters. Mongolia has everything to become an ecological example for the rest of the world, if….

If the future economical goals go hand in hand with a strive for an ecological balance.

Kiki, Bayana and Joël, you were a dream team, thank you !

THANK YOU

We just arrived home after a very long day of flying.

Min veertig graden

«Avontuur is mijn leven, mijn passie.

Training with a world Champion

During this preparation period for our expedition every little detail is carefully studied, gear is being tested and many hours are spent working out in the gym and running and hiking in the woods. For our expedition, the one extremely difficult thing to train here in Belgium is the dog sledding itself . (almost) no snow, (almost) no dogs!

One would (almost) forget we have an European and World Champion amongst us: Joël Reyniers! Please check out Joël’s website: http://www.runbeforebeauty.be/

After a couple of phone calls Joël was so kind to spend a morning dogsled training with me. We ran the dogs for about an hour and a half and we talked about the do’s and don’t’s of mushing. Although, far from being comparable to the Mongolian cold, the 4°C felt “extreme” on this stormy wet, and above all, muddy morning.

The hauling of the dogs brought back sweet (Canadian) memories. It was during that time she wore her first pair of mukluks, marveled at the warmth and comfort and learned to hand-sew both mukluks and moccasins from the native women. In 1985, she began making the footwear in her home for people who would provide the leather.

Patti listened to our needs for the upcoming Khuvsgul Dogsled Expedition and provided us with all the necessary information. We opted for the “Arctic Ribbon Mukluks.

Mukluks or Kamik are soft boots, traditionally made of reindeer skin or sealskin and were originally worn by Arctic aboriginals, including the Inuit and Yupik. The word "mukluk" is of Yupik origin, from maklak, the bearde seal, while "kamik" is an Inuit word. Mukluks weigh little and allow hunters to move very quietly.

Our Steger Arctic Mukluks, an example of ancient high tech, will be one ot the most important items to cope with the extreme temperatures of the Mongolian winter!

Genieten bij -40 graden Celcius

BERT POFFÈ RUILT LEUVEN even in VOOR NOMADENBESTAAN IN MONGOLIË

Neither in the chaos of society, nor in the complexities of switching over to the simplicity of far-away places. The draw of a simplified life and the intricacies of tribal and cultural differences seem to be the red line through Bert and Kiki’s adventures. The surrounding magnificent mountains fill you with a powerful peace. Not one visitor will ever forget the magic of this place!

But as we all know by now, Global Warming is affecting us all, also Mongolia and Khuvsgul.

Things have changed since I visited the lake for the first time in 2003. The most remarkable fact I observed is the constant increasing number of uprooted trees on the lake’s shoreline : many of them are blown down because permafrost melt weakens their roots.

Scientific studies show that permafrost layers have reduced from 1 to 2 meters in 40 years, more than 30%. This is the result of the increase of the average temperature which is about 2°C during the last 60 years in this area. In winter, the increase is even bigger: about 3°C during the December-January-February period.

This causes other problems : water holes appear now, that weren’t there before, mostly on the east coast around the two main islands. They’re created by the internal streams of Khuvsgul Lake, but due to the increase of water temperature as well as the thickness of ice layer that is reducing year after year. Some local fishermen may enjoy that! But for me it sounds like something wrong is happening here. Khuvsgul’s eco-system is in danger!

Khuvsgul is the most wooded area of Mongolia, but these forests are now threatened by a new phenomenon : spontaneous fires, which I have seen a lot on the east cost. First I was wondering why. Then I got the answer from some Mongolian scientists.

The permafrost melt is releasing water during the summer, and this water causes fermentation in the most dry lands, covered by peat. This chemical reaction releases a very flammable gas. As a result of that, just one little spark may trigger a terrible forest fire... Brown bears, reindeers, wolves, and other species need this woods to survive. How long will they stand the degradation of the eco-system?

We must act fast and let the entire world know about what is happening everywhere on the planet : the wildest areas are becoming endangered. I assure you, seeing it with your own eyes is much more impressive than reading about it in the newspapers!

I strongly hope Bert and Kiki can help me to pass this message : we need to be conscious that global warming is a reality, and we have to take decisions and act consequently.

Joel Rauzy

Rimfaxe of Klättermusen

Lillo Buyle from “KARIBOE" recommended us the Rimfaxe of Klättermusen for our upcoming Mongolian expedition.

It’s our new survival jacket in organic fluorocarbon-free cotton” says Lillo ; “Taped waterproof garments are not the optimal choice for winter or high altitude conditions”.

The wind resistance (MFR 8) of Rimfaxe is more than adequate for the hardest of winds, something that has been tested on several expeditions to the North Pole. Thanks to Joel she became an outdoor enthusiastic and eventually she became very much interested in the Nomadic people of her beloved Mongolia.

The couple became the first and only Mongolian dogsled outfitters.

Mission

Circling the Khuvgsgul Lake by dogsled and Munkh Saridag (3492 m) Mountain Ascent
The Khuvsgul Dogsled Expedition 2009 pays tribute to the Mongolian nomads and the wild beauty of this country.

Dogs have always been an integral part of Mongolian nomadic life, but only after French Joel Rauzy came with his dogs to Mongolia dog sledding began to catch on as a Mongolian winter activity.

The Khuvgsgul Dogsled Expedition 2009 will circle the Khuvsgul Lake, baptized "the blue pearl of Mongolia", during a 15 days long dogsled expedition.

On the trail we will meet and stay with the local nomadic people and pay tribute to and learn from their knowledge and wisdom to survive in these typical, sometimes harsh circumstances.
We will also attempt the winter ascent of the Munkh Saridag (3492)

Paying tribute to the Mongolian Nomads and their relation to nature
The treasure of Mongolia is not only in its beautiful landscapes… The treasure of Mongolia is the country itself, its roots, history and traditions. Mongolia is one of the last nomadic countries in the entire World. Nevertheless the population is becoming sedentary, the nomadic way of life, result of thousands of years of experience, is disappearing… And by the same way the economy is changing drastically, the society is searching itself for a new way of life.

The Khuvsgul Dogsled Expedition 2009 wants to pay tribute to the knowledge and the lifestyle of the Mongolian Nomads.

We want to show the world the beauty of this country and its people. Eco-tourism, with a key role for the nomadic families gives them a chance to stay in the countryside, to live from their cattle, proudly, like their ancestors, and with an important and very respected place in this new society.

Introducing dog sledding into the Mongolian pristine landscape proved to be a brand new, ecological and effective way of traveling during the long Mongolian winter. The nomads were able to collaborate in the eco adventures in summer. But now, thanks to the dog sledding winter is a "eco-economical" bonus instead of a natural obstacle

Raising awareness for the Climate Change – also in Mongolia!
Mongolia, temperatures rising twice as fast as global average !! Clyde Goulden, a researcher from Philadelphia's Academy of Natural Sciences who is studying the ecology of Lake Hovsgol, notes that higher temperatures have already begun thawing the permafrost and disturbing the soil structure around the region's fragile trees.

Mongolia has been hit especially hard by global warming, with temperatures rising, on average, twice as fast as the global average - winter temperatures have jumped 3.6°C over the last 60 years.

The grasslands are on the verge of ecological collapse. The environmental problems are closing in on two fronts at once." Dubbed the "blue pearl" for its pristine state, Lake Hovsgol, besieged on two fronts by harmful land-use patterns and the effects of global warming, risks tipping into an "alternative stable state":

"This transformation could be a one-way ticket. A long-standing question in ecology is whether communities of species can be tipped into "alternative stable states." The steppe grasslands, for example, have proved for millennia to be a robust solution to life in cold, dry Mongolia. But once widespread conversion to semidesert occurs, it might be virtually impossible to reverse.
In the taiga, even a temporary loss of permafrost, combined with extreme drought and fires, might be a point of no return.

The receding permafrost has left large areas of ground uncovered, accelerating soil warming and chipping away at the taiga forest. Spurred on by the region's wildfires, which have been steadily increasing over the last few years, and droughts, the region's remaining swaths of forest and grasslands risk being lost in a single summer - leaving behind a spare, "semideserted" ecosystem.

A word from our patron

His Excellency Sheikh Meshal Bin Hamad Al Thani

It is an overwhelming feeling for me as a Qatari, coming from a warm region , to have the pleasure to contribute to this Belgian-Spanish, French-Mongolian expedition team, preparing for a 15 days dog sledding expedition in the Mongolian winter, where temperatures of -40 degrees is not really anything special.

This Khuvgsgul dogsled expedition 2009 is a tribute to the Nomadic people of Mongolia. I share with the expedition team their admiration for the hardship of Mongolian Nomads life, which in one way or another brings back memories of the life of the Arab Nomads in the Peninsula.
Unfortunately global warming is a scientific undisputable fact. Temperature in Mongolia seems to have risen twice as much as the global average.

This increase in temperature will undoubtedly have a serious impact on the nomadic life, which is considered the oldest habitat in the human history.

It is my belief that we should act now and worldwide! This expedition has a strong ecological message.

At a state level, Qatar is increasingly involved in environmental issues and welcomes all actions and initiatives towards a cleaner and greener planet.

Thus, it is not surprising to know that His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, The Emir of The State of Qatar, is the driving force behind many Qatari environmental projects, such as protecting the status of coral reef, monitoring the temperature in the marine environment, etc.

I wish the expedition team all the luck and express the assurance of my full support.

Meshal Bin Hamad Al Thani
Ambassador of the State of Qatar to the Kingdom of Belgium

Partners

Special thanks to our partners:

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5302270975431514322" style="DISPLAY: block;
